LED TVs vs. LCD TVs: How do they differ?

Most people today prefer to upgrade to the home theatre system. While this includes many things, the one major question that people get stuck at is: What kind of TV to buy? Though the new models like OLED and QLED have hit the stores, the two types of TVs that are more commonly used are LED TV and LCD TV. Though well-known, many people seem to be unaware of the difference between an LED TV and an LCD TV.

Backlighting:

This is the main difference between an LED and an LCD TV. Technically speaking, an LED TV is a type of LCD TV because both have Liquid Crystal Display. The point of difference is the lights that they use. LCDs use fluorescent lights while LEDs use those light emitting diodes at the back of their screens. Further, in LEDs, this placement of the light can differ i.e., the light emitting diodes can be placed behind the screen (backlit) or around its edges (edge-lit).

Picture Quality:

LED TVs provide better picture quality. They work with more diverse RGB-colored lights that produce sharper and lifelike pictures. Also, the LEDs can be locally dimmed or brightened which allows the picture to display blacks appear deeper and darker as per your taste and preference. This is not possible in edge-lit LED TVs. So, choose an LED TV with full-array backlighting with local dimming.

Size:

LED TVs are slimmer than LCD TVs. Comparing the screen size, LED TVs come in various sizes ranging from 32 inches to 72 inches. All these models are full HD or 4K Ultra HD. The huge screens that you see at stadiums, arenas, etc. are all full HD LED screens.

Price:

If the price is the main concern, you will have to choose an LCD TV because an LED TV comes with many advanced features that make their price more but worth. LED TVs are newer and more advanced than LCD TVs so the latter now come at a comparatively less price.

Energy saving:

Energy efficient TVs have hit the markets too. These TVs are more suitable for those who are concerned about power consumption. LED TVs consume less energy as they use less light to display pictures. Many LED TVs also qualify for Energy Efficiency Standard as they are designed to use less energy than LCD TVs while also providing better quality pictures.
